Abstract painting with expressive acrylic textures by Sally K

ABSTRACT

These abstract paintings explore emotion, movement, and intuition through layered color and expressive mark-making. Created as a counterpoint to figurative work, they allow space for spontaneity, experimentation, and release.

Each piece invites open interpretation while remaining grounded in presence, rhythm, and materiality.

FREEDOM
COLLECTION

A series of abstract works rooted in gesture and material, shaped by memory, movement, and a connection to language and place.

Sally K in studio with abstract paintings

Known for large-scale portraits of women crowned with florals, this body of work marks a shift away from predetermined imagery toward a more intuitive, material-led process. Rather than knowing the outcome in advance, the paintings unfold through gesture, feeling, and response. Drawing from my parents’ native language, I began incorporating elements inspired by Arabic writing, focusing not on legibility but on the curves, rhythms, and lines that give the language its visual character. Influenced by Abstract Expressionism, the work is defined by gestural marks and a sense of controlled spontaneity. Vivid fluorescent colors are layered alongside darker tones, with thick and thin marks creating strong contrast and visual tension. Pastels are introduced to soften the surface, balancing the raw texture of the canvas, which is treated with sand before each painting begins. Collected from the beaches of Qatar, the sand is applied evenly to the surface, giving each work a distinct tactile quality. The process begins with scratches and marks made using pastels, spray paint, and acrylics, recalling Arabic words and phrases as the layers develop. Before the paint fully dries, sections are scraped back and pulled downward across the canvas. This cycle of application and removal is repeated until the composition reaches a sense of balance. Solid color fields and carefully placed drips are added in the final stages, bringing resolution to the work. Together, these paintings hold traces of memory, emotion, and place, anchored by a language and visual rhythm that reflects the Arab world in which I was raised.

FLOWER FEILDS
NATURE SERIES

Abstract paintings that translate the rhythms of nature into gesture, color, and scale.

Process-driven abstract painting by Sally K

The Flower Fields collection is a series of large-scale abstract works inspired by nature, movement, and the sensation of openness within the landscape. Working primarily with acrylic and mixed media, this body of work continues a process-led approach, allowing gesture and intuition to guide each composition rather than a predetermined image. Influenced by the freedom and spatial rhythm found in the work of Joan Mitchell, these paintings embrace continuity, variation, and the expressive potential of mark-making across expansive surfaces.

Color is applied in layered passages, moving between density and restraint, with areas of the canvas intentionally left exposed. These white spaces are not empty, but active, allowing breath, pause, and light to exist within the composition. The paintings develop through movement and repetition, echoing the natural rhythms of growth, wind, and shifting fields rather than fixed forms.

Together, the works in Flower Fields hold a sense of vitality and openness, balancing energy with stillness. They reflect an ongoing exploration of freedom within structure, where nature is not depicted, but felt through motion, scale, and the physical act of painting.
